I attend Half the Sky Live showing in Boston on March 4th. I was dissapointed by the turn-out and the lack of advocacy outside the theater. I showed up early for the movie, thinking I would have trouble getting tickets. It turned out the theater was about 1/3 full. I received a notification from the grassroots organization One to attend the movie. I thought there would be attendance and 'voice' from One at the theater as well. In future events, I would also recommend a call for volunteers to create awareness outside the events could garner more support. I would have done my part if I knew. Friday March 5, 2010

I just returned from the CARE " Half the Sky" event and I cannot contain
myself. It was beautiful, uplifting and sometimes heart wrenching, but
such a wonderful effort on CARE's part to raise awareness about the
plight of half the upholders of our beautiful sky. I was
especially proud of the Duchess of York, when she repeatedly championed
the work of WRA!! Such an innovative method to raise awareness. It is
events like these that I predict will effectively get the ball rolling
towards shedding the light on the global plight of women , because it brings real
issues and stories to an audience that might otherwise be oblivious to
what is really happening to women globally.
GO CARE!

Four friends and myself traveled 40 miles to a theater in Erie, Pennsylvania to watch the movie last night. We had read the book and are members of Zonta International. We were all moved by the book and movie and are active in programs to eliminate the issues spoken of. My concern is this. There were maybe 20 people in the whole theater. I expected it to be packed, I also thought there would be tables set up, selling the book, not to sound so materialistic, but bags, t-shirts, coffee mugs, CARE info. Is it possible that CARE needs to have a direct contact with a women's organization in the cities where the movie was shown last night that could have weeks of lead in publicity and make this the event of the year that all women do not want to miss? We would like to show the film this summer at Chautauqua Institution and will definitely have displays, and items such as the above as part of the event. I would want to help in the future if another movie is shown in select theaters. Thank you for your work |
