President Obama Creates a New Position for International Women’s Issues
Posted by: CARE on March 11, 2009 at 3:28PM EST

This last week, President Obama named Melanne Verveer to be an ambassador-at-large for international women’s issues. This new position serves under Secretary of State Clinton. In a White House statement announcing the position, they mentioned that women are "pioneers of economic, political and social progress in their countries.”

CARE is delighted to hear the news that the new administration has recognized women’s roles in lifting the world’s poor out of perpetual poverty and looks forward to working with Ambassador Verveer on all the important issues of our time.

As you might recall, this ambassador position was one of the major components of IVAWA. It is our hope now that this new position will be backed with a well staffed office and the resources needed to address women’s issues that effect the world.

This is very exciting and rewarding for me since I was advocating on Capital Hill for IVAWA not too long ago!
