I'm exhausted. I flew in from DC to Dhaka via Doha, arrived at 5am local time and hit the ground running. I'm advancing another Learning Tour for CARE, in preparation for a large delegation in April. We meandered through the crowded streets - rickshaws cutting off our SUV from every direction - visiting colleagues involved in our maternal health programming and trying to understand the complexities of the issue. Bangladesh has reduced maternal mortality by 40 percent but still 76 percent of births still happen at home. How could this be? It seemed so straight forward in the African context. If women had access to facilities where they could see a trained medical professional, maternal mortality was bound to decline. But in Bangladesh the same issues exist yet most feel confident they will reach MDG 5!
