Growing Responsibly

For me, meeting with CARE colleagues and leadership here in Mexico City has been crucial.  We need their support, as our work fighting the HIV epidemic in Côte d’Ivoire continues to grow exponentially.

Côte d'Ivoire, in West Africa, is a country emerging from six years of civil conflict.  CARE first came to the country in 2000 to implement a regional HIV program, but with the outbreak of violence we were forced to change our focus to emergency response.  Today we're rapidly ramping up our HIV programming again – it's grown to $26 million, up from $3 million four years ago.

Most of our HIV work on the ground is carried out by local partners.  We work hard to monitor their progress and be sure it lives up to CARE's standards through effective  capacity building efforts.  For the most part, we already know what works.  Innovation is good, but it can be costly, and we want to use our resources efficiently.  So it's important to stay focused as we grow.

Today we're now responsible for half the antiretroviral medications coming into the country. Over the next four years, in Africa alone, I expect CARE to be responsible for more than $600 million in funding from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. It's a big job, and we have to make sure we’re doing it right.
